Quality Check for Custom Fasteners
For general engineering purposes, custom fasteners are available upon early notice to direct manufacturers. Their businesses aim to provide fabrication of fasteners approved for marine, airship, spaceship, military, high-rise building and every construction involving high risk of life and limb. In general, fasteners encompass Bolts, nuts, screws, washers, studs, and stud bolts. Fasteners are usually made of stainless steel, electro-chemical, cadmium plating, plated steel, brass, aluminium silicon bronze, and zinc plated steel. In some cases, customs fasteners cannot be used where they can be exposed to fluids that may cause corrosion. Generally, water is the adverse to the composition of fasteners. Specifically, torque-type nuts which have strands of nylon inserted therein cannot be used in fuel tanks.
Fasteners are not as simple as they sound. Any production that has not complied with the standard composition and process can mean loss of life and peril of safety. In fact, the United Kingdom Accreditation Service is one of the members of Accreditation Body Evaluation Program akin to Fastener Quality Act of United States. Its task is to monitor different testing laboratories for fastener and certify only those who are compliant with the standard quality set forth in the Act. The Act guards the public safety. It requires fasteners for sale to adhere exactly to the specifications to which they are advertised and guaranteed. All testing laboratories of fasteners must be inspected and accredited by authorised accreditation body.
Manufacturer of fasteners must observe production of two separate locks for each detachable Screw, bolt, pin, nut, or other fastener otherwise removable. This requirement is very important especially when used in airplane for carriage or training purpose. Loss of fasteners in air transportation may prevent safe navigation and landing. In addition, self-locking nut is highly discouraged to be used in any rotating bolt unless a locking device resistant of friction accompanies the self-locking device.
For consumer’s protection, only the finished and final product should undergo the sampling and laboratory test. At the same time, the seal of the accredited quality test laboratory can only be marked to fasteners, which passed the fastener quality test.
In connection with the same Act, the Defence Standard promulgated by UK Ministry of Defence also set out specific rules for quality assurance of threaded fasteners designed for ships and submarines. The standard also points out detailed conditions for specific kind of fasteners. All contractors of The Ministry of Defence are subject within the jurisdiction of United Kingdom and European Health and Safety at Work Law. Since production of industrial fasteners involved exposure to direct chemicals, which are hazardous to health, necessary safety measures and preventions must be observed in the workplace to ensure quality of fasteners produced by every labourer. This statutory requirement must be observed strictly by manufacturers to avoid penalty or termination of contract with the Ministry of Defiance. Quality
Assurance for custom fasteners requires use of chemical for corrosion treatment to prevent locking of fasteners assembled over a period. Fasteners, regardless of their compositions, are sensitive to temperature instability. Manufacturers must observe proper calibration in the production and storage process to maintain the usefulness of their product.
